Sample testing of claims

Purpose

When year-end pressure is high or a single cost centre has drawn attention, sample testing gives you a clear exception rate without opening a full-period audit of every travel expense application.

What we do

We agree a narrow population — for example overseas lodging claims above a set amount, or applications with weekend departure dates — then test that slice against receipts and policy. Findings focus on that population only.

Useful when

• Internal audit already plans a broader review later
• A new travel policy has just been introduced
• One business unit shows unusual average claim sizes
